I prepare my students for all standardized tests for college and private school.  The key to success is planning ahead. The goal of any test taker should be to enter the exam with confidence.  The only way to achieve this is to avoid last minute stressful preparation and instead allow the student adequate time.  I do not believe in preparing for any test in a boot camp environment. Practice is the key to success.

PSAT

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is administered in our school districts to students in the 11th grade.  Students can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program if they score in the top 1%.  The test measures the students’ reading, writing, language arts and math abilities. I suggest starting to prepare for the PSAT during middle school.

SAT/ACT

Both the ACT and SAT are accepted by all U.S. colleges. Both the ACT and the SAT include core sections on Reading, Writing, and Math. Both tests include an optional essay, and neither penalizes for wrong answers.

The SAT contains three sections: Reading, Math, and Writing and Language. The ACT contains four sections: Reading, Math, English, and Science.  Each section has a different format on the ACT compared to the SAT, but contain only a few differences.

I prepare my students by teaching them the substantive material on each test.  I also have them look for the patterns in the test so they are best equipped to handle all types of questions. I review all questions/answers in detail so they can learn from their mistakes.

PRIVATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS TESTS

Admission to top private schools is a very competitive process and should not be underestimated.  Adequately preparing for these tests are imperative to obtaining acceptance.  I thoroughly prepare my students for all language arts, vocabulary and writing questions on both the ISEE and SSAT.

The ISEE test is broken into three levels – lower for students in the 4th and 5th grade, middle for grades 6 and 7 and upper for those in grades 8 through 11.  Each of these levels is divided into three sections that measure test takers’ learning capability, reading comprehension and essay abilities.

Meanwhile, the SSAT is also divided by levels, with students in the 5th through 7th grades taking the lower test and those in the 8th through 11th grades registering for the upper assessment.

Test takers must complete sections that measure their verbal and quantitative abilities, as well as their reading comprehension and how well they can assemble written responses to essay questions.
